Technology Brokerage 

AAW Assistive Technology: An item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially, modified, or customized, that is necessary to increase, maintain, or improve a participant’s communication, self-help, self-direction, and adaptive capabilities. Assistive Technology also includes items necessary for life support and durable and non-durable medical equipment not available under the Medicaid state plan. Assistive technology service includes activities that directly support a participant in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device, limited to:

  • Purchasing, leasing, or otherwise providing for the acquisition of assistive technology devices for participants

  • Selecting, designing, fitting, customizing, adapting, applying, maintaining, repairing, or replacing assistive technology devices

  • Coordination and use of necessary interventions or services with assistive technology devices, such as interventions or services associated with other services in the ISP

  • Training or technical assistance for the participant, or, where appropriate, the participant’s family members, guardian, advocate, authorized representative, or other informal support on how to use and/or care for the Assistive Technology

  • Training or technical assistance for professionals or other individuals who provide services to the participant on how to use and/or care for the assistive technology

  • Extended warranties

  • Ancillary supplies and equipment necessary to the proper functioning of assistive technology devices, such as replacement batteries

  • Independent evaluation as required for this service, if not available through the State Plan, other waiver services, or private insurance.
