Personal Care Attendant

Reports To: Direct Care Staff Supervisor

Summary of position

Personal Care Attendants provide assistance with activities of daily living to individuals with physical disabilities and the elderly in home and community based settings. Personal Care Attendants must be dependable and able to work flexible hours if needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities may vary depending on client needs which may include any of the following

  1. Assist with client’s personal care routine including bathing and showering routines, dressing, undressing, and personal hygiene tasks
  2. Assist with various transfers including stand and pivot transfers to and from the bed, wheelchair, and/or shower chair
  3. Assist with various toileting procedures
  4. Repositioning clients
  5. Assistance with client’s self-administered medication
  6. General housekeeping as needed
  7. Meal preparation and feeding when needed
  8. Transport clients to and from errands, doctor appointments and other locations as needed by the client
  9. Willing to take direction from client on specific care routines
  10. Attend training as needed to learn the proper care techniques
  11. Assist clients with all physical activities they are unable to perform for themselves
  12. Work in a safe manner and follow safety policies and procedures
  13. Maintain privacy and confidentiality at all times in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  14. Any other duties as directed by the client and/or supervisor


  1. Be 18 years of age or older with a valid Social Security Number
  2. Possess a high school diploma or GED
  3. Possess basic math, reading, and writing skills
  4. Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen
  5. Ability to pass various background checks
  6. Experience working and assisting persons with a disability is preferred. Persons accepting this position should understand that working some weekends, holidays and all shifts are required for this position.
  7. An adequate and reliable vehicle to drive to and from work and also to transport during scheduled shifts is required.
    1. Being dropped off at a shift is not acceptable; the vehicle must be readily available to you during a shift

When required by the consumer, the attendant must be able to demonstrate the capability to perform health maintenance activities specified in the consumer’s service plan or be willing to receive training to be able to provide the health maintenance activities specified in the consumer’s service plan

Personal Care Attendants may not serve as a consumer’s legal guardian, power of attorney, fiduciary / representative payee, or beneficiary.
