- CRI’s device re-utilization program includes a device exchange program and device recycling.
- Device Re-utilization:
- CRI through its newsletter will allow consumers to list items for resale. CRI does not store or repair the items and makes no guarantees on the condition of the articles. Transactions are by the seller and the purchaser. CRI does not charge consumers to place ads in its newsletter.
- The CRI ATRC also keeps a list of consumers and items they have for sale. This way, the ATRC may make referrals at any given time to consumers that may need the equipment.
- The CRI ATRC on a quarterly basis notifies staff that interact with consumers that certain pieces of used equipment are for sale.
- Device recycling:
- CRI’s device recycling program has three components:
- Accepting equipment
- Cleaning equipment
- Redistributing equipment
- CRI accepts only equipment in good working order in the following categories:
- Speech communication
- Vision
- Hearing
- Computers and related
- Daily living
- Learning, cognition and developmental
- Environmental adaptations
- Mobility, seating and positioning
- Vehicle modification and transportation
- Recreation, sports and leisure
- CRI’s policy on accepting equipment where the giver is requesting a tax write off is as follows:
- The giver must have a letter from a vendor or distributor that states that the equipment depending on condition and age is worth “X” amount of dollars. Once received CRI will accept the equipment and provide a letter for tax purposes.
- CRI will clean and sanitize equipment once received. Once equipment is cleaned, CRI will store the equipment until donation can be made.
- CRI will periodically through e-mails, memos and meetings provide staff with a list of equipment available for distribution to consumers.
- CRI will also note available equipment in its newsletter.
- CRI will focus donations on consumers that are below federal poverty levels and cannot receive or afford the equipment by purchasing.
- This Program is Supported by the Pennsylvania Institute on Assistive Technology (PIAT).
